Should I buy a GI before my childs first BJJ class?
Not necessarily.
Most Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies have loan gis that beginners can borrow for their
first few sessions. If they don’t, a T-shirt and a pair of tracksuit bottoms
are usually perfectly acceptable—although it’s always worth checking with the
academy beforehand, as every club has its own policies.
As Panda Martial Arts, we’d love for you to choose one of our kids’ BJJ gis when
the time is right. But we’d also rather you buy with confidence than feel
rushed into a purchase.
Children can be unpredictable when trying a new sport. Some fall in love with BJJ after
their first class, while others decide it’s not for them. Waiting until your
child has enjoyed a few sessions before investing in their first gi is a
perfectly sensible approach.
When you’re ready, we’ve put together a simple guide to help you choose the right
size and find a gi that will last as they progress.
