Kids' First BJJ Class Checklist
Share
Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an exciting step for children and parents alike. While it's normal to feel a little nervous before that first class, a little preparation goes a long way towards making the experience enjoyable.
Before You Leave Home
✔ Comfortable BJJ Gi or academy uniform
✔ BJJ belt (if provided)
✔ Water bottle
✔ Clean feet and trimmed nails
✔ Long hair tied back
✔ No jewellery
Arriving at the Academy
Try to arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives your child time to settle in, meet the coach and get comfortable with their surroundings.
Most academies are welcoming and supportive environments where new students are encouraged to learn at their own pace.
What Happens During the First Class?
Most beginner classes include:
- Warm-up exercises
- Basic movements
- A simple technique
- Partner drills
- Fun games for younger students
The focus is on learning and confidence rather than winning.
Tips for Parents
- Avoid coaching from the sidelines.
- Allow your child to learn at their own pace.
- Celebrate effort, not results.
- Encourage consistency.
