What Should Kids Wear to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

One of the most common questions parents ask before a child's first lesson is what they should wear.

The answer depends on whether the class is Gi or No-Gi. Most academies can provide a loan Gi for the first class, if shorts or tracksuit bottom with a t-shirt would be fine. No Zips or pockets though.

Gi Training

A BJJ Gi consists of:

  • Jacket
  • Trousers
  • Belt

The Gi is the traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uniform and is worn in most beginner classes.

No-Gi Training

Most academies recommend:

  • Rashguard
  • Shorts
  • Leggings or spats

Avoid clothing with zips or pockets as these can cause injuries.

What Else Should They Bring?

Water Bottle

Hydration is important during training.

Flip-Flops

Useful for walking around off the mats.

Hair Ties

Long hair should be securely tied back.

What Shouldn't Be Worn?

  • Jewellery
  • Watches
  • Hoodies
  • Clothing with zips, buttons or sharp fasteners

Final Thoughts

Comfortable, clean and well-fitting clothing helps children focus on learning rather than adjusting their uniform.
