How to Care for Your Child's Gi (So It Lasts Longer)

Why Gi Care Matters
A good gi is an investment — and with the right care, it can last your child through years of training, gradings, and competitions. Whether your little one is just starting out or already earning belts, these simple habits will keep their gi looking crisp and feeling comfortable.
1. Wash After Every Session
Martial arts training is sweaty work! Always wash the gi after each session to prevent bacteria and odours from setting in. A quick wash is far easier than trying to shift a stubborn smell later.
2. Use a Gentle, Colour-Safe Detergent
Harsh detergents can break down the fabric fibres over time and cause colours to fade. Use a mild, colour-safe detergent — especially important for coloured gis like light pink or royal blue, where vibrancy matters.
3. Wash in Cold or Warm Water (Not Hot)
Hot water is the enemy of a well-fitting gi. High temperatures cause cotton to shrink, which can turn a perfectly sized gi into one that's suddenly too small. Stick to a cool or warm wash (30–40°C) to preserve the fit.
4. Don't Tumble Dry — Air Dry Instead
Just like hot water, a tumble dryer can cause significant shrinkage. Hang the gi up to air dry naturally, ideally outdoors or in a well-ventilated room. It'll dry faster than you think and keep its shape much better.
5. Check the Care Label
Every gi is slightly different. Always check the manufacturer's care label for specific instructions — when in doubt, cooler and gentler is always the safer choice.
6. Store It Clean and Dry
Never stuff a damp gi into a kit bag and leave it overnight. Moisture breeds mildew, which can permanently damage the fabric and cause unpleasant smells. Make sure it's fully dry before storing.
7. Have a Spare for Competitions
If your child competes regularly, consider having a second gi kept specifically for competitions. This way, their everyday training gi takes the wear and tear, and their competition gi stays pristine.
