BJJ Gi vs Judo Gi: What's The Difference?
Share
At first glance, a BJJ Gi and a Judo Gi may look similar. Both include a jacket, trousers and belt, and both are used in grappling martial arts. However, they are not exactly the same.
If you are training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it is best to use a proper BJJ Gi.
Fit And Cut
BJJ gis are usually cut closer to the body. The sleeves and trousers are generally more fitted, which helps reduce excess material for grips.
Judo gis are often looser and wider because Judo involves different gripping and throwing techniques.
Fabric And Construction
Both types of Gi need to be strong, but BJJ gis are designed for ground fighting, gripping, pulling and constant friction during rolling. Reinforced stress points are especially important.
Collar Difference
BJJ Gi collars are typically designed to be durable and harder to manipulate during sparring. Collar strength matters because grips and chokes are a major part of BJJ.
Can You Wear A Judo Gi For BJJ?
For a first trial session, some academies may allow it. However, for regular training, a proper BJJ Gi is the better choice. It will fit better, perform better and be more suitable for BJJ-specific training.
Best Choice For Beginners
If you are starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, choose a BJJ gi that is comfortable, durable and correctly sized. This will make training easier and help you get used to the demands of the sport.
