Beginner’s Guide To Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can feel intimidating, but every practitioner begins as a complete beginner. You do not need to be fit, flexible or experienced before your first class.

You just need to turn up, listen and be ready to learn.

What Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on control, positions, submissions and technique. It is practised by adults and children around the world for fitness, self-defence, competition and confidence.

What Should You Wear?

For Gi classes, you will need a BJJ Gi and belt. Many beginners also wear a rash guard underneath for comfort and hygiene.

For no-Gi classes, you will usually wear a rash guard and grappling shorts.

What Happens In Your First Class?

Most beginner classes include a warm-up, technique practice and controlled drilling. Some classes may include sparring, but beginners are usually guided through this carefully.

Basic BJJ Etiquette

A few simple rules will help you settle in:

  • Arrive on time
  • Keep your kit clean
  • Trim your nails
  • Listen to the coach
  • Respect your training partners
  • Tap early if needed
  • Ask questions if unsure

Choosing Your First Gi

Your first Gi should be comfortable, durable and correctly sized. A well-fitting Gi makes learning easier and helps you feel more confident during training.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is challenging, but it is also rewarding. Start slowly, stay consistent and enjoy the learning process.
